I love to make bread, but I know that for many people, bread making can be intimidating. Especially when you are camping or away from home. A few months ago, I came across a bread recipe that my family has fallen in love with! Best of all, it is super easy and virtually anyone can make it. All it takes is a little planning ahead, but it would be a fantastic recipe to make on a camping trip because of the simple ingredient list and quick prep time.
This makes a medium size, round loaf. I have started making two loaves each time I make it, as everyone loves it so much – the first loaf tends to be gone within minutes and then we have a second one left for later :).
First, mix together in a medium to large bowl:
3 cups flour
1/4 tsp yeast
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup water
Stir ingredients together. It may seem a little bit dry, but that’s okay, just stir until it comes together in a ball and then cover with plastic wrap. Once covered, set it aside on the counter (not in refrigerator!) for 12-24 hours. Can you believe it? The easiest bread dough preparation ever!
I like to prepare my dough before I go to bed so I know it will be ready the next day whenever I have time to bake it.
Once you are ready, set a fairly large piece of parchment paper out on your counter top. Shake some flour out on the paper and then scoop your dough onto the flour. The dough will be pretty sticky, so you’ll want some flour on your hands as you work the dough into a round loaf. Once your loaf is shaped, cover with plastic wrap and set aside.
Turn your oven to 450. While it is heating place a large dutch oven or enameled dutch oven inside it to heat. It should heat for 30 minutes. (I have to pull the top rack out of my oven to allow enough space for my dutch oven.)
After 30 minutes, remove your lid and pick up the sides of your parchment paper and set your bread into the dutch oven. Replace the lid and close the oven. Set the timer for 28 minutes.
Once the timer is done, remove the lid (don’t forget to use a hot pad, it will be HOT!) and let the bread continue to cook for another 12-13 minutes.
Once the top is done browning, remove the pot from the oven and take the bread out to cool on rack. My family hardly waits for it to cool down before they are slicing it and slathering it with butter! They have concluded it is the “best bread in the world”!
I’m just happy because they love it AND it’s the easiest bread in the world!
Make sure you give it a try!
