Making An Impact – With the Utah High School Rodeo Association

Citizenship is. . .a sense of belonging to a community for which one bears some responsibility.  In a word, citizenship implies public-spiritedness, which is akin to patriotism, and has to be cultivated.  Walter Berns

As Utah’s number one dealer in the horse trailer industry, both in sales and stocking, C&R feels a great responsibility to the rodeo community.  It has been a great honor to sponsor various rodeos and rodeo associations across Utah and Idaho, and we have been blessed by the relationships we have formed with so many great people.

One of C&R’s very favorite community involvement efforts rides into town with the Utah State High School Rodeo Finals each June.  For the past three years, in conjunction with Trails West and the Utah High School Rodeo Association Scholarship Fund, C&R has sponsored a horse trailer giveaway.  Rodeo participants from junior high age up through high school students take on the responsibility of selling the raffle tickets – providing an opportunity to build self-confidence, improve communication skills, and invest in themselves and in their future.  The raffle tickets are sold prior to the state finals, culminating in a drawing where the lucky winner receives a brand new Trails West Horse Trailer donated by Trails West and C&R Auto and Trailer Sales.  Talk about excitement!  100% of the proceeds are used toward scholarships for Utah High School student athletes.

Russ Stebar of the Utah High School Rodeo Association remarked, “Last year more than 170 high school seniors received scholarships [because of this event].  The neat thing about it is that the average GPA of the recipients last year was 3.6.”  Students must apply for the scholarships, which are then awarded based on academic performance, rodeo performances, and the number of events the athlete participates in.  Stebar explained that the association looks for students who are well-rounded, not necessarily an all-star in one particular event, but one who participates in a variety of rodeo events and performs well.  Involvement in the community and high school is also looked at.  The scholarships are strictly used to pay for college/trade school tuition.  Previous to C&R’s involvement, the scholarship fund reached a maximum of $35,000.  We are thrilled at the impact we have been able to make.  According to Stebar, with the support of the trailer giveaway, the scholarship fund reached $65,000 in 2016!  We couldn’t be more honored to support these great student athletes and their families in the important quest to further their education.

Of course, we love a good party, and so the pizza party that C&R sponsors on the opening night of state finals is always a highlight!  Last year the rodeo contestants made quick work of a truckload worth of pizza, and then washed it all down with drinks and ice cream!  What a great night!
